Very Rare FRENCH + INDIAN WAR (King George’s War 1744 – 1748) document SIGNED by DAVID WOOSTER, as a CAPTAIN of - “A Regimental Court Martial in Sir Wm Pepperell’s Regiment Louisbourg the 30th May 1748”.

Document is two pages (one sheet both sides) in length and details the charges against FOUR soldiers, “Sergant Greenfield of the Company Confined by a Regimental Court Martial, For Neglect of Duty, & disobedience of orders” – AND – “Sergant Monro of Cap’t Boyles Comp’y and Corporal Call of Cap’t Jacobs Comp’y” “confined by the Same Court Mart’l for disobedience of orders + Neglect of Duty” – AND – “John Akins of the Major’s Company, confined by order of Lieu’t Gordon, for Selling a new pair of Shoes, and on Suspicion of breaking open a Chest of Jeremiah Andrews, and taking from thence a Dollar + a half, and a New Shirt”. The document further outlines the testimony of various witnesses, the prisoner’s response to their charges, and the final verdicts of the Court Martial as follows.

FOR Sergant Greenfield, Sergant Monro, and Corporal Call - “Tis the opinion of the Court, that the Prisoner is not Guilty, and that he be Acquitted”.

FOR John Akins - “Tis the opinion of the Court, that the Prisoner is Guilty of Selling his Shoes, but not breaking open the Chest, and that he receive One Hundred Lashes”.

THIRD FRENCH + INDIAN WAR (King George’s War 1744 – 1748) - the successful SIEGE of the French military fortress at Louisbourg (Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia) in 1745 was led by Colonel William Pepperell of Massachusetts. It represented the only real important military engagement in North American during King George’s War, the British / French conflict also known by its European equivalent, the “War of the Austrian Succession”.

Major General DAVID WOOSTER (1711 – 1777) was mortally wounded at the Battle of Ridgefield, Connecticut on April 27th 1777 while attacking the rearguard of British General Tyron’s forces after the raid on Danbury. He would die 5 days later, just two short years after the onset of the Revolutionary War. Wooster’s signature has always been RARE in any form and particularly on documents so early in his military career.

CONDITION: document measures about 8 ¼ x 13 inches in size and is in fine overall condition. There are three horizontal folds and some minor toning / soiling.
