The receipt is payment for Fifty PoundsSterling and is dated 1758 in Savannah. On the verso of the document: \"Paythe contents to Devonsheir Reeve and Lloyd. Merchants in Bristol. The nameBenj. Martyn is listed at the bottom of the document opposite Henry Ellis\'ssignature. Henry Ellis (1721-1806), often called the \"second founder ofGeorgia\" was the second royal Governor of Georgia 1758-1760. He was anexplorer, slave trader (1750-1755), and eventually Governor of Nova Scotia.Henry Ellis replaced the unpopular John Reynolds as Georgia\'s second royalGovernor. Colonists found him to fair and competent. Henry Ellis settled theland disputes of Mary Musgrove Bosomworth, which had caused long frictionbetween Georgians and the Creek nation. Ellis also developed lastingfriendships with the Creek leaders, which helped the Colonists in a bitter warwith the French and the French allied Indians. Specific mention of this note topay John Davis is cited in \"the Letter Book of Thomas Rasberry\" GeorgiaHistorical Society Collections Vol. XIII, p.33. Benjamin Martyn (1698-1763) wasan English writer and government official. He served as the only secretary forthe Trustees for the Establishment of the Colony of Georgia in America from1732 to 1752.
