Benjamin Franklin’s Magic Square and Magic Circle are among the very fine plates; seems Franklin, dabbler of all dabblers, tried his hand at mathematics as well. Many pages devoted to the Stamp Act & other dramatic news from the colonies, the Boston Convention & News from Faneuil-Hall, John Hancock, Taxes, General Gage, Gen. Bernard, Virginia, Maryland, Hadley’s Quadrant, Inoculation, Trade with America & other colonies, Indian Tribes, a Masquerade Party, Anatomy - Skulls, Fetus, American Armadillo, &c. All 20 engravings are present, the volume is complete, and most handsome with a gorgeous vellum spine over marbled boards. Boards show some wear and rubbing but all, inside and out, is steady, strong, clean and neat. One of the cleanest volumes from this series I have yet encountered, a real beauty, though a heavyweight as well, with astonishing political and scientific news, and remarkable plates. 625pp. + indexes. Rare historical volume, scarce and most intriguing.
