Selling here is a very large folio, late eighteenth century King James Holy Bible, printed in Oxford by T. Wright and W. Gill, 1770 (Herbert 1203). A very scarce English pulpit Bible, it is truly massive, measuring 19.5\" x 13.25\" x 4.75\" thick, and weighing in at a whopping 25 pounds! Bound in period blind tooled reversecalf, spine with seven raised bands, page edges speckled red. The contents are complete, unpaginated, signatures read: [2],b2-11F2,*A-*E2, with general title printed in red and black. Text in double column.The Apocrypha is included in the register; the New Testament withseparate titlepage. The index is separately signed.
The binding is holding quite firmly though outer joints are somewhat strained; the corners are slightly exposed and bumped. The front cover has some heavier peeling and light warping from damp exposure many centuries ago; the leather torn and pulled but certainly still restorable; rear cover, as shown, in much better shape. Textblock is firm, contents generally in good crisp condition, clean but for some light toning, minor browning / dust marking to edges; general title creased and with some fraying to edges, less so to the following few leaves. The front EP has some loss and creasing; some lighter water staining notable to the last few quires with final few leaves again creased, concurrent lighter water stain to upper margins through the block but generally in good condition internally. Family history for the Head family (as shown) applied to the verso of the NT title page.
