HERE is a genuine PENNSYLVANIA COLONIAL CURRENCY NOTE FOR2 SHILLINGS, dated April 3rd, 1772, and bearing the hand signatureof JOHN MORTON, A SIGNER OF THE DECLARATIONOF INDEPENDENCE.

Features vignette of Royal Pennsylvania Armsat right. The back of the note shows a woodcut of a leaf (ananti-counterfeiting measure) and the words \"To Counterfeit is DEATH\"(along top) and \"Printed by D. HALL and W. SELLERS. 1772\" (along bottom).

JOHN MORTON was a delegate from Pennsylvania to the ContinentalCongress, and provided the swing vote that allowed Pennsylvania to vote infavor of the United States Declaration of Independence. Morton signed theDeclaration and chaired the committee that wrote the Articles of Confederation.Morton was the very first signer of the Declaration of Independence to die, onApril 1, 1777, less than a year after signing the Declaration. He is buried inthe city of Chester, PA. His signature is very hard to find!

The wording on the front of the noteis as follows:

TWO SHILLINGS. According to anAct of General Assembly ofPensylvania, passed in the Twelfth Year of the Reign of his MAJESTY GEORGE the Third. Dated the 3rd Day of April, Anno Domini 1772. (In old British monetary system, 12 Shillings = 1 Pound Sterling)

His signature can be found on theDeclaration of Independence directly below that of BENJAMIN FRANKLIN. (See photo from facsimile of Declaration ofIndependence showing Morton\'s signature below Franklin\'s). JOHN MORTON was one of just 3 signers of ColonialCurrency who later signed the Declaration of Independence. His signature onthis 2 Shilling note is exactly the same as that on the Declaration!
