This is an indictment signed by future Brigadier General Thomas Polk as Jury Foreman. The Court of Oyer and Terminer was held in Salisbury before Judge Alexander Martin, who would become Governor and U.S. Senator after North Carolina became a State. Gabriel Jones of Surry County was alleged to have assaulted George and Peter Hairston (who were prominent citizens in Southern Virginia). The indictment was signed by Benjamin Boote, who was and remained a staunch loyalist, and Adlai Osborn, who would become a Patriot Lt. Colonel, signed as Clerk on the back and listed the witnesses. Thomas Polk signed as foreman of the Grand Jury and wrote \"A True Bill\". Thomas Polk was one of the founders of Charlotte and represented Mecklenburg in the Colonial Assembly. He was a Captain and Colonel in the militia and fought in several battles. In 1787 Nathaniel Greene appointed him Brigadier General. Polk (1732-1794) is perhaps most noted as a signer on May 20, 1775 of the Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence. In 1791, when George Washington took his famous Southern Tour, he stayed with Thomas Polk at his Charlotte home.
