Original Bute County, North Carolina summons dated November 8, 1774, with notation and signature of Sheriff Jethro Sumner (1733-1785) on the reverse. Sumner served as a Brigadier General of Continental troops from 1779-1783, one of five Continental Generals from North Carolina. His grave is located at Guilford Courthouse National Military Park. He was a tavern keeper and Bute County sheriff before the war. Sumner County, Tennessee (originally in North Carolina) was named for him. His signature is scarce. Size about 6 1/2\" x 7 1/2\".
