Biography of the Artist

Schreber, Johann Christian Daniel (1739 – 1810)

Born in Weißensee(Germany) in 1739, Schreber was a german Naturalist. He studied medicine, natural science and theology at Halle and Uppsala then undertook an intensive study of botany with the great Swedish taxonomist Carl Linnaeus in 1758.

Description of the work.

We are pleased to offer a selection of prints from “DieSaugthiere inAbbildungen nach derNatur mit Beschreibungen” (Mammels in Pictures from Nature with Descriptions) published in 1774 with 755 hand-colored engraved plates.

The plates were first createdfrom patterns by Buffon, but soon after Schreber tried to get the " best draftsmen from home and abroad ": artist such as George Edwards, De Seve, Kretsch and Bylaert realized the drawing of " The most extensive and long time uncontested standard work of mammalogy " (Nissen).

Each print measure approximately 8” by 9” 3/8(20,5 by 25 cm).

The condition of these prints is very good, with characteristic strong plate.Wonderful chained hand made paper.
