An Authentic Narrative of a Voyage performed by Captain Cook and Captain Clerke, in His Majesty\'s Ships Resolution and Discovery, during the Years 1776, 1777, 1778, 1779, and 1780; in search of a North-West Passage. including a faithful Account of all their Discoveries, and the unfortunate Death of Captain Cook. By William Ellis

Illustrated with a Chart and a Variety of Cuts. Assistant Surgeon To Both Vessels. THE THIRD EDITION

In Two Volumes. Volume I have 358 pages and a map and 8 engraved plates. Volume II have 347 pages and 13 engraved plates. Size 5,5x8 inch. The plates are clean and fresh. Scattered light foxing, but the plates are clean and fresh. Bound in original boards, redacted in tan paper with new spine labels.

Ellis\' narrative contains much valuable information on Alaska, the Northwest Coast, and Hawaii, and the attractive engraved plates, after the author\'s drawings, include eight of Hawaii, two of Alaska, and three of the Northwest Coast. The plates show Ellis to have been a talented amateur artist, and represent a significant contribution to the graphic record of the voyage. They \'are among the earliest published on the Hawaiian Islands, Alaska, and the Northwest\' (Hill).

Ellis was a surgeon’s mate during Cook’s third voyage... and gives quite a good history of this expedition... Clerke, in his dying letter to Sir Joseph Banks, commended Ellis, but Ellis forfeited Banks’ regard by publishing his account of the voyage in contravention of the Admiralty instruction to surrender all journals and logs. It appears that, needing money, Ellis sold his narrative to a bookseller for fifty guineas... Ellis’ account of Cook’s death preceded Samwell’s Narratives by four years

This is the third edition, which Forbes says is “a reset edition, the text following that of the 2nd edition” which Hill says, “follows the first edition practically without alteration. with the exception of the title pages [on which “third edition” appears].This is a very attractive copy notable in two respects - it is untrimmed and in its original boards, and it is the copy belonging to famed bibliographer and historian Justin Windsor, with his bookplate in each volume. See Hill 556. BMM Catalog I, 590. Beddie 1601. Forbes 74. Parsons 128. This third edition is much scarier than the first two. No copy has appeared at sale since 1966. Book spine was replaced because the original was destroyed. Adding the new spine is a perfect working, like you can see in a pictures. If you have another question just let me now..
