Chartof the Society Isles Discoverd by Captn Cook 1769

35cm x 21.5 cm copperplate engraving, 38 cm x 24 cm sheet size,AlexanderHogg, London, 1785

Weare pleased to offer this scarce and historically important originalchart of the principal Leeward Islands of the Society Islands in whatis now French Polynesia compiled by Captain James Cook on his first voyage ofdiscovery in 1769 and engraved for the New, Authentic, Entertaining, Instructive,Full and CompleteHistorical Account of Captain Cook\'s First, Second, Third andLast Voyages1published seriallybetween 1784 and 1786. Cook\'s chart is centred on Raiatea andTahaa, with Bora Bora, Huahine, Maupiti and Tupai on theperimeter. Recognising that the islands were already named by thenative inhabitants he decided these original names should be retained(Ulietea was a variant name for Raiatea) but decided to name the groupof islands as a whole as the Society Islands, recording in his journal:

\"Ulietea, Otaha andBolaBola [are] so call\'d by the Natives and it was not thoughtadvisable to give them any other names but these three together withHuaheine, Tubai, and Maurua as they lay contiguous to one another, Ihave named Society Isles \"2

Beautifully engravedwith delicate yet quite elaborate hachure work for topography thisexample is enhanced withfine hand colour work including a lovely cyan wash for littoral watersand will make a elegant presentation if matted and framed and animportant addition to any collection related to the explorations ofJames Cook.

Notecareful depiction of rocks and shoals, depth soundings, anchorages -Cook and hiscrew considered charting aresponsibility to future mariners to warn of dangers and as a solemnduty. To get a sense of chart detail consider that the distancefrom \"Ohamene Harbour\" on Tahaa (Otaha) to the coast of Huahine as seenbelow measures just 12 cm actual size:

Cook often mistook the soft Tahitian \"P\" sound for \"L\" andhence, \"Bola Bola\":

Condition- Please note carefully:The chart is in overall very good condition as can beascertained from photos, strongimpresssion with distinct platemark on fine quality laid paper, very fine hand colour work, no text onverso, nofolds. Chart exhibits a small dark spot in upper left corner ascan be evaluated in photos and otherwise theimage area is essentially pristine. Some trivial light browning to margin edges with a close and slightlyuneven trim to bottom margin; image ofprint showsitlying flat in freestate with all edges shown for evaluation. The editor of the New, Authentic, Entertaining, Instructive,Full and CompleteHistorical Account of Captain Cook\'s First, Second, Third andLast Voyages was named as one \"George WilliamAnderson\", almost certainly a pseudonym for the publisher AlexanderHogg. In a recent exhibition of these historicallyimportant engravings made for this publication the Lowe Art Museum inMiami noted that thepseudonym was \"a device Hogg employed in a number of his publications\"intended to convey an \"aura of authoritative knowledge\" regarding hisediting of the official publications of the voyages. Hoggshrewdly elected to publish the work (which eventually includedaccounts of other circumnavigations) in a relatively affordable serialformat from 1784-1786 to reach abroad audience, noting in his marketing copy that this was \"due to themanythousands of Persons who would wish to peruse the Discoveries... andview the astonishing fine Copper-Plates, who have hitherto beenexcluded from gratifying their eager curiosity. Theseinstallments would allow every Person, whatever may be hisCircumstances, to read about the voyages of which such vast Sums of thePublic Money have been expended.\" 2.
