Description:
First published in England in 1784, Cooks 3rd Voyage was quickly re-published in Paris in 1785. Many consider the engraving quality to surpass the English edition.
“Pirogue des Isles Sandwich, avec les Rameurs masques” is one of the iconic images of Cook’s fatal visit to these islands. The scene is the west coast of the island of Hawaii. Whether Cook was the first European visitor to the islands is a subject of debate, but clearly he was welcomed as a sort of demi-god. The image was no doubt drawn from scenes from Cook’s 1st arrival. The image is crisp and the engraving the equal to that of the English version (as discussed above).
