ten (20) 1790s indenture forms
Philadelphia, Pa.This is an unusual group of blank legal document forms printed over 200 years ago, which were intended to be filled out as indentures. There are 10 sheets, stitched together along their left edge. They are printed with identical info on both sides, so there are 20 forms in all. Presumably, when filled out, these were kept on file in an office of the City and County of Philadelphia. The forms measure 15x19 inches in size, and are in fine condition, except that the top sheet has a 1” band of sunfading across its top edge. The forms are printed on a high quality of paper, made to last a long time---more than two centuries so far, and still in great shape. In more than 3 decades of collecting ephemera, I’ve seen loads and loads of completed indentures, but I’ve only come across a pad of blank forms like this a single time, when I purchased the pad at a sale in the 1980s. It is quite rare to find such early forms in completely unused condition. The printed sections say (note the old-fashioned substitution of the letter “f” for “s” in the interior of words, etc.):THIS INDENTURE made the Day of in the year of Our Lord One Thoufand Seven Hundred and NinetyBetweenof the one part and “the Commiffioners of the City and County of Philadelphia.” of the other part.
