A first edition of this examination of the separation of church and state, and the division of power between the Church and the law.

Francis Peter Plowden (1749–1829) was a lawyer and historian. With the lifting of the restrictions preventing Roman Catholics from pleading, Plowden was called to the bar at the Middle Temple in 1796. He would have acquired considerable practice in the chancery courts had he not been held back by a misunderstanding with the lord chancellor. He became eminent, however, as a legal and political writer, and published several pamphlets against William Pitt the younger.

Rebound in paper-covered boards. Externally worn, with some loss to the boards. Hand-written spine label. Rear joint failed, with board detached. Internally, generally firmly bound although strained in places. Library label to front pastedown. Pages are mainly bright, with some scattered light spotting throughout. Overall: FAIR.
