This is a wonderful, original document dated 1797, Princeton, a diploma of those graduates who were a member of the American Whig Society. A very scarce document worthy of the finest Princeton collections. Many of the graduates who signed this went on to become men of fame and importance.

Document is approximately 12x15 inches, vellum, original seal intact. Minor wear to the text, folds, else in overall fine condition. Only 21 other known copies exist, those being in the Princeton Historical Archives. This document came from a small group of estate papers belonging to Charles Ewing of New Jersey, one of the signers of the document.

The American Whig Society (1769-1941) served as a major political, debating, and literary force both on the Princeton campus and throughout the nation.

The Secretary of Diplomas was responsible for acquiring the medals awarded for the annual prize debates and acquiring the diplomas given to the graduating class and year-end ceremonies. In addition, the Secretary of Diplomas had to make certain that graduating members had no outstanding fines.
