Saur was another printer originating from the Germantown Saur printing firm, which has a long history in American printing and the American Revolution (best known for the 1776 Gun Wad Bible). A popular book originally published in Germany and America in 1791, the American edition became quite popular with some sects, Dunkers, Mennonites, etc.This German American hymnal was published without music, as were most hymnals of the time. Bound in well worn original leather, with remnants of clasps. Rounded to edges, with the front board nearly detached, the rear with hinge stressed as well. Main title missing lower half, a few small chips here and there, else fine. Binding and text block solid and tight, some soiling and light staining throughout. Front pastedown with handwritten ownership of a Michael Roth in 1801, else unmarked. A little worn, but quite acceptable.A RARE PENNSYLVANIA GERMAN SAUR HYMNAL.
