The promissory note described below bears the signaturesof Samuel Hamilton and David Hunt.
Hamilton (1752-1810) was born in Ireland and immigrated to the United Statesin 1772, settling initially in Boston where he married the former MaryTyler (1752-1842). Then, in the early 1780s the young couple moved toChesterfieldin Cheshire County in New Hampshire where they raised their family: John,Hannah, Hance, Loammi, James, Samuel, Ara, Fanny. Uri and Amadella.
Hamilton was a linenweaver and after his passing in 1810 was buriedin the Center Cemetery in Chesterfield.
Dr. David Hunt,(1773-1837) the lender of the money, was born in Northampton,Massachusetts in 1773, the son of a doctor, and studied medicine. A respectedpractitioner and scholar, he received the honorary degree of Doctor of Medicinefrom Yale in 1818. He was also a Fellow of the American AntiquarianSociety, and the American Geological Society. Apart from his medical practice,he was a respected mineralogist, and had a large and impressive collection of rocks and minerals.
He died in 1837 at the age of 64.

This is a 1798promissory note signed by lender, David Hunt, and borrowerSamuel Hamilton. It measures approximately 4 1/2 by 7 1/2\" in size.Several light folds, light wear along borders, one tiny page break top center.None of these detract. Please see graphics.
The document has writing on both sides. The first side reads:
\"I SamuelHamilton of Chesterfield, for value rec\'d of David Hunt, promise to payhim the sum of eighty two Dollars & seventy seven Cents on demand withinterest.
\"1798 Sep.t 12th -- Samuel Hamilton-- New Hampshire.\"
In the lower left corner are some ink numerical notationsapparently showing various payments that were received.
The second sidealso shows payments made and has Hunt\'s signature,\"D. Hunt.\" It reads:
\"Saml Hamilton -- Note $82.77,1798 Sep.r 12th -- 1798 Nov.r 12th Recd twenty Dollars.
\"Rec\'d ten Dollars in part of hisNote -- Feb.y 25th, 1799.
\"D. Hunt.\"
