Elegant Figures in a Garden at a Banquet, 17th Dutch Old Master
17th century Dutch Old Master figures in a garden, oil on panel. Exquisite early work depicting a group of figures elegantly dressed and enjoying a banquet in a garden setting. The subject is essentially about the good things in life – company, food, music, wine etc, all of which are being consumed and enjoyed by the group. A gentleman in expensive and exuberant dress relaxes in a chair whilst smoking a pipe and savouring the music of the lute. The pose with the arm resting on the hip suggests both exuberance and aristocratic swagger. Others converse, merry-make, and enjoy the atmosphere. The table has been dressed with expensive cloth and has plates of food. At first glance the image appears no more than a depiction of worldly pleasure, but the image is full of symbolic references with deeper meaning, such as the discarded bones.
Excellent figure painting and beautiful warm palette. The work is closely associated to Dirck Hals and is from his circle and typical of his oeuvre – and verified by leading industry experts. Remnants of an old label on verso. Remarkable for its age the panel bears no splits or cracks. Presented in a good wood frame with brass presentation label “Dirck Hals Haarlem 1591-1656 Haarlem”.
Very good to excellent condition. Ready to hang.
Provenance: With Christies listed at £5,000 to £7,000
Measurements: Height 41cm, Width 60cm framed
Dirck Hals (1591-1656) was born at Haarlem (Netherlands) and was a renowned Baroque painter who favoured scenes of groups of people enjoying themselves either outdoors or in a typical Dutch interior. Much of his work contains symbolic references so that his depiction of worldly pleasure was never entirely without a deeper meaning. His elder brother was Frans Hals who painted one of the most famous works The Laughing Cavalier (held in the Wallace Collection London). Dirck earned a membership of the prestigious St Luke’s Guild in 1627.
