Offered here for your consideration is a good 17th or early 18th century bronze sculpture of a rearing horse on a rouge marble base.It resembles a preparatory drawing for the monument to Francesco Sforza, drafted by Leonardo da Vinci in circa 1485, now in the Royal Library at Windsor castle. In the 17th century, the Italian sculptor Francesco Fanelli also produced several small bronze rearing horses that display similarities in posture and size to the example offered.It was purchased from the estate of Henry Osborne Havemeyer Frelinghuysen, philanthropist and grandson of Henry Osborne Havermeyer, art collector and founder of the American Sugar and Refining company.It is in overall good condition for its age with some signs of re-soldering or fill by tail, re-soldering to rear legs and 3-5 small pinholes to body (possibly from a saddle or other fixture. There is a resecured front leg and crusty overall patina. The marble base has the typical chipping and fritting to edges and corners.
