? Jacques d\'Amboise (between1440 and 1450 – 27 December 1516) was a French religious dignitary and patronof medieval France. He was abbot of Jumièges then of Cluny,and bishop of Clermont. He was a member of the House ofAmboise, an old noble family. He was the son of Anne de Bueil and Pierred\'Amboise, lord of Chaumont, as their seventh of eighteenchildren. Entering the Benedictine order he was elected abbot ofJumièges in January 1474, replacing his brother Louis on his appointment as bishop ofAlbi. Jacques took his oath of loyalty as abbot on 20 February 1474and took possession of the abbey on 28 May. In 1485 he succeeded a Bourbonas abbot of Cluny, rebuilding the Cluny abbots\' hôtel in Paris as well as itsnow-lost chapel and collège. Located beside the Gallo-Roman ruins, the hôtel deCluny hosted several royal visits and would be inhabited by cardinalMazarinin 1634. He also built the abbatial palace of Paray-le-Monial.The bishopric of Clermont had been left vacant at the end of 1504, and Louis XII appointed Jacques d\'Amboise to it –he held the post from 1505 until his death. He completed the diocese\'scathedral and replaced its tiles with a lead roof, as well as richly adding toits library and creating a tapestry in the choir of which four pieces are nowin St Petersburg.In 1515 he built the fountain that bears his arms and name in Clermont.Like his brothers Louis and Georges, he had a great sense of family:he appointed several of his nephews to church posts, adorned all his works withhis family arms in or palé de gules and even inserted prayers for his familyname in the eucharistic prayer, when this was actually only allowed to sites ofthe apostolic college.

The House of Amboise was aFrench noble house, taking its name from Amboise,a town which it possessed as a seigneurie. The oldest of the house\'s family lines to beattested in the written sources comes from Touraineand dates to 1155. The text mentioning it traces the lives of the lords ofAmboise and celebrates the virtues of each lord in turn. Originally the lordsof Amboise were the vassalsof the first counts of Anjou but after several controversieswith them the lords became independent, obtaining sizeable fiefdoms such as theViscountcy of Thouars and Principality of Talmont. This powerfulknightly family was called \"the family of Mars\". Its eldest branchran until the 15th century with Louisd\'Amboise, lord of Amboise, viscount of Thouars. The line of thecadet branch, with a magnificent estate at Chaumont-sur-Loire, has continued uninterruptedto this day, via Pierre d\'Amboise, governor of Touraine andadvisor to the French kings Charles VII and Louis XI.
