HINDU MANUSCRIPT PRAYER BOOK

N.D. Circa 1800-50; Likely India/Nepal; Illustrated; Sanskrit/Nepali Written Text, Different Hands; w5\"xh10\"; 30 Pages; Very Rare!!!

ATTRIBUTES:

A Lovely Accordion style parchment/cardboard type design with text on both sides, with 12 Brilliant hand colored Gouache Illustrations of Hindu Gods/Goddesses/Ravana, with some geometric symbols, 14 black images with purple background, two black uncolored illustrations,text in I believe black Sanskrit; One side looks more professional and other side more amateurish!!!

SUMMARY FROM AN MEMBER:

- picture that you have uploaded which shows 3 drawings on one side and 4 on the other - mantras and tantras. for an example the left most on the page of 4 drawings read \" to be fearless of ghosts and goblins\", another one beside it shows how to become king. top page left first shows to be young (literally reads \"aging goes away\") while top page middle one is for \"no fear of enemies\".
- picture with bird in it also shows different yantras, mantras and tantras.
- picture with purple paintings one on each side - top side is shiva painting with a title and bottom is durga painting with title.
- at the beginning of the description of planet (not always the first line), it reads \"om namo bhagwate ravanai\' meaning [i] bow down to lord ravana. if you know about ramayana, ravana was villain in this epic. it is said that all 9 planets where under his control and used to lie under his feet. he conveniently arranged positions of all 9 planets being under his control so that his son who is born at that time becomes undefeated, although the plan was foiled by rahu and ketu who could not stand still. also on another occasion planet \'shani\' or saturn eyes ravana because sage narada told him that he was very powerful but what an awful situation that all 9 planets where under his feet and he could not see their miserable faces, so he ordered them to turn and thats how shani saw him and he was defeated since him \"seeing you\" brings bad luck / misery.i am not sure about, the picture 1 and 6-11 that you have uploaded, talks about \'graha\' or planets although the names do not correspond to any that i know. it talks about \'rog\' literally meaning \'disease\' or characteristics if they are not in favour and at the bottom, it also talks about solving that problem and making the planets favourable by giving mantra for that planet.

Ravana is the primary antagonist in the Hindu epic Ramayana, where he is depicted as the king of Lanka.

The Rāmāyaṇa, meaning Rāma\'s journey, is the first of two Sanskrit itihāsas (ancient Indian heroic epic poem) traditionally ascribed to the Hindu muni (sage) Vālmīki; the other one being the Mahābhārata attributed to Kṛṣṇa Dvaipāyana Vyāsa. It narrates the life of Rāma, a legendary rāja-kumāra (prince) of Kośala - and his banishment from his kingdom by his father king Daśaratha, his travels across forests in India with his wife Sītā and brother Lakṣmaṇa, the kidnap of his wife by his enemies, resulting in war with Rāvaṇa (the king of the island of Laṅkā) and eventual return to Ayodhya to be crowned king.

Yantra (यन्त्र) is the Sanskrit word for a mystical diagram, especially diagrams from the Tantric traditions of the Indian religions. They are used for worship of deities in temples or at home; as an aid in meditation; used for the benefits given by their supposed occult powers based on Hindu astrology and tantric texts.

Tantra (Sanskrit: तन्त्र), also called Tantrism and Tantric religion, is an ancient Indian tradition of beliefs and meditation and ritual practices that seeks to channel the divine energy of the macrocosm or godhead into the human microcosm, to attain siddhis and moksha. It arose no later than the 5th century CE, and it had a strong influence on both Hinduism and Buddhism.

A \"Mantra\" is a sacred utterance, a numinous sound, a syllable, word or phonemes, or group of words in Sanskrit believed by practitioners to have psychological and spiritual powers. A mantra may or may not have syntactic structure or literal is Fair/Good. Wear to edges, missing back cover, not sure if complete, I believe it might be minus the back cover, some blemishing/wear throughout.
