We are offering a rare figural elephant’s head brass desk type bell with ivory tusks and glass eyes. It was found at the estate sale with no identification other than an item listed as an “invalids” bell in her household inventory. After extensive research, I found one other that is identical to mine listed for sale on the website of a dealer in American Cowboy and Western items. That one was identified as a “prostitute’s” bell that was used in western saloons to call for service. I have not been able to verify that either of these uses was its original purpose. I have shown it to several experienced antiques dealers and saleeers and none of them have ever seen one like this. My inclination is that it was most likely used in a hotel as a desk bell.

It is in excellent working order. When you wind the mechanism, and push down on the tusks, the bell rings as long as you keep pressure on the tusks. The bell is loud and certainly would have brought attention to the bell ringer. The brass is unpolished and has a very attractive patina. There are no visible markings or identification on either the bell or on the elephant. However, the bell has been dropped as there is a dent visible on the top left side of the head. You can see in my images from the back that there was evidently very strong pressure applied to the top of the head that caused the ears to splay outward that caused them to crack. The length from the tip of the trunk to the top of the head is 6 ¼ inches, the width at the widest part of the head is 3 ¾ inches and the height is 2 ¾ inches. I believe that this rare bell dates from the late 19th century. We have a reasonable reserve to protect our investment so please don’t be afraid to offer on this very unusual elephant bell. Thank you for your interest and I will be happy to answer any questions you may have regarding this item.
