WELCOME TO SALLY’S DIARIES:

Thisjournal is not only historical but it’s also so beautiful when itcomes to the penmanship. And I can imagine what the cover once lookedlike, although very worn and torn right now. The marbled papers onthe front and back and the leather spine must have been a fabulousdisplay at one time.

Ibelieve the journal is from England and it contains 137 handwrittenpages. On the very first page is written “Cumberland Collection,Carlisle Dist. Do. 5th Dr. 7 & 8 Rounds. 1803.”

Ileaned that Carlisle is a city and the county town of Cumbria.Historically in Cumberland, it is also the administrative centre ofthe City of Carlisle district in North West England. Carlisle islocated at the confluence of the rivers Eden, Caldew and Petteril, 10miles (16 km) south of the Scottish border. Further research needs tobe done however.

Asthe pages begin it looks like they are listing the different liquorbusinesses, brewers, and the like and who owns them, for example:

Victuallers(A person who is licensed to sell alcoholic liquor): Ann Johnston,Christian Park, Thomas Jobson, Joseph Forester.

CommonBrewers: Daniel Pattinson

Chandlers:Henry Ivison, John Lonsdale

BrandyDealers: Robert Graham

Teaand Tobacco Dealers: Thomas Blaylock, Caleb Hodgson

Thenthe pages after this list each name separately and the amount soldand I think the business name itself possibly. For instance I foundbeside Ann Johnston name “Kings Head” and besideChristopher Park the name “Globe” and by Thomas Jobson thename “Castle Street Blackswan” and so on and so forth.

Finallytowards the back of the journal there are quite a few pages under theheading “Index to General Letters. Duty Received by Officers.”Looks like a list of letters sent just using their subject matter. The earliest one sent is from June 15th, 1703 and the lastone is in 1803. Some of the titles include: Duty Received byOfficers, Feigned Surveys, Certificates, Complaints, Frauds, TideStamps, Tea and Tobacco, Journals in Rides, Sick Officers, surveyBooks, Permits, Foot Walks, Officers on Leave, Residences, Smugglers, and more.

Thenat the end are some notes for “April Transfers”.

Thebinding of this journal is good and there is some foxing on thepages. As you can see the cover is very worn and torn. The journalmeasures about 5” x 9”.
