Book Id: 309177Description:Octavo, bound in contemporary quarter calf over marbled paper boards, the spine panel ruled in gilt and with red leather title label lettered in gilt. 263 pp., eight leaves of plates engraved by Chapman, published by Dilly & dated Dec. 1, 1797. Small closed tear to upper margin of last leaf of Preface (ix); a few small stains and creases in the text; binding lightly worn and scuffed but - remarkably - still solid and with solid hinges, both externally and externally. Quite a nice copy, overall, of this seminal Gothic Novel.Comments:¶ Clara Reeve (1729-1807), English author. \'The Old English Baron\', her first novel, was originally published anonymously (as \"By the editor of The Phœnix\") in 1777 under the title \'The Champion of Virtue\'. A new edition appeared in 1778 under the current title and in Reeve\'s own name. Written in imitation of Horace Walpole\'s classic popular gothic tale \'The Castle of Otranto\' but designed to keep within certain limits of credibility, it is a romance of the 15th century, in which a slight element of the supernatural is introduced in the shape of the ghost of a murdered baron. After the title was changed for the second edition the work became very popular and successful, likely inspiring the novels of Mrs. Radcliffe and others. The plates, correct to this edition, were obviously made for the sixth (Dilly) edition of 1797.
