This is a wonderful, original document, dated 1812, Ohio, where General Nathaniel Massie and his wife Susan have sold to James Gaskill land in Ohio...signed at bottom by Nathaniel and Susan Massie, Joseph Tiffin and Henry May. Signed on back by Joseph Tiffin. Document is 12x15, folds, toned, pinholes along fold lines, overall good condition.

Nathaniel Massie(December 28, 1763 – November 13, 1813) was a frontier surveyor in theOhio Countrywho became a prominent land owner, politician, and soldier. He founded fourteen early towns in what became theState of Ohio, including its first capital,Chillicothe. In 1807, theOhio General Assemblydeclared him the winner of the election forgovernor, but he refused the office.

Massie served as aRoss countydelegate to the 1802Ohio Constitutional Convention[1]and was a leader of the Jeffersonian faction that supported statehood. He was a leader of theChillicothe Junto, a group of who brought about the admission of Ohio as a state in 1803, and largely controlled its politics for some years thereafter. Among his colleagues in the faction wereThomas WorthingtonandEdward Tiffin. He was aPresidential electorforThomas Jeffersonin 1804 andJames Madisonin 1808.He was a Trustee ofOhio Universityfrom 1804 to 1808.Massie served in the General Assembly and was the first president of theOhio Senate.

Massie led troops in theWar of 1812, but died ofpneumoniain the late autumn of 1813 at the age of 49.
