Early American Silver Three-Piece Tea Set;Thomas Fletcher and Sidney Gardiner, Philadelphia, Circa 1815
Comprising a teapot, cream jug andcovered sugar bowl, with die rolled bands of rosettes, marked on undersides. The teapot and cream jug features the head of an American eagle. 88 oz (2727 grams).
The silversmithing firm established in Boston in 1808 by Thomas Fletcher and Sidney Gardiner, and relocated to Philadelphia three years later, produced silver of unprecedented quality and grandeur. Their work displays sophisticated design and skilled manufacture. The grand scale and patriotic imagery that characterize much of their work reflects the country\'s coming of age as a commercial, industrial, political, and artistic center. This remarkable set provides anextraordinary example of their artistry.
