A truly fascinating find, this is a finely bound massive folio Holy Bible with John Brown\'s annotations, printed in England but with American family records. John Brown (1722-1787) of Haddington, Scotland, was a minister of the Secession Church and theologian who published extensively on theological topics. Brown\'s substantial and beautiful Self-Interpreting Bible was first published in 1778. Designed for popular use, it remained in print for over a century. As noted in the Oxford DNB (2004), Brown\'s Bible was \"as familiar in Presbyterian households as John Bunyan\'s Pilgrim\'s Progress [.].\" This a worthy acquisition indeed- bound in a great fine original dark mohagany marbled leather binding with gilt diamond designs on the boards with borders, the name Amelia Eastburn and the date 1820 in gilt in the center of the upper board; the spine with gilt and leather title label, thick raised bands and decor, as shown. Boards with a few scuffs, peels, exposures and bumps, slightly faded and nearly detached in front (rear detached); the spine cover also starting, but still intact and nicely preserved with bright gilt, as shown. Some bumping and slight losses. Text with some pleasant tone; lightly foxed with a few small stains throughout; includes the Apocrypha and New Testament, all complete. Illustrated with numerous plates, as shown. Family records applied at the end of the OT with some ephemera from the Eastburn/Armour/Elgin/Gittings family of West Virginia/Frederick Co, MD from the late 1700s-early 1900s. Measures roughly 17.5\" x 11\" x 5.5\". A rare early 19th century, massive folio Bible in a unique fine binding and early family records from the USA.

This is a truly historical find, and is a treasure that only few can call their own. Good luck!!
