The Holy Bible, Containing the Old and New Testaments: Translated Out of the Original Tongues...etc...Canne\'s Marginal Notes and References...To Which are Added an Index....etcCooperstown: Stereotyped, Printed & Published by H. E. Phinney, 1828.
The publishers are legendary- The Phinney brothers, Henry and Elihu, carried on the business their father, Elihu Phinney, had started in 1795; the elder Phinney had established a press, bookshop, and newspaper after resettling in Cooperstown from Connecticut. James Fenimore Cooper, a delegate to the 1816 convention that formed the American Bible Society, learned to set type in his shop for fun (Hills, 69). The younger Phinneys, however, were not to be restricted to one shop: They sold their stock (which consisted of their own publications together with books brought in from Philadelphia and New York) from large travelling wagons and established a \"bookboat\" on the Erie Canal that enabled them to reach a larger portion of western New York. This is a truly unique piece of history....an early Cooperstown King James Version Bible,

(Smith used Phinney Bibles to translate in 1828!)EXTREMELY VALUABLE
SACRED IMPRINT!This historic bible is in decent shape, with a complete Bible text, starting at Genesis and ending at Revelations; bound without the Apocrypha. The attractively weathered leather covers show their age, undoubtedly, but remain present and weathered nicely, as shown in the pics, with some rubbing, rounding, and such; both detached. Spine with raised bands as shown with original red and gilt title label, light loss as well at the extremities. Leather with peeling and scuffing as well. The pages are mostly present, lacking only a few leaves at the rear Index, a couple leaves from the Tables in front, and half of the final leaf in Malachi, otherwise all present. Front & rear boards, title and frontis detached with some loss, creasing and wear. Family pages and leaves before and after contain info for the Buel, Hollister, Ford and Burdick families, mostly of Valparaiso, Porter County, Indiana, from 1806 to the late 1800s. This includes James M Buel, Blackhawk and Civil War Lieutenant. Block somewhat browned with some soiling, the main text with minor foxing, chipping, a few tears, staining and similar wear. Numerous illustrated plates throughout. Measures 11\" x 9\" x 3.5\". This is a great candidate for a quiet reflective evening or a timeless conversation piece, & is a true piece of Mormon and family history that still inspires and reflects.

Biographical Sketch: Relatively little is known of James M. Buel and the details of of his military service. It is known that he fought in both the Black Hawk War and the American Civil War, serving as a 2nd lieutenant in the latter. The 1850 Federal Census record for Valparaiso, Porter County, Indiana, indicates that Buel was born circa 1809 in Massachusetts and was a manufacturer of wagons. The same record shows that James was married to Harriet M. and that he was the father of Roana E., George S., and Mary B. The 1880 Federal Census for Chicago, Cook County, Illinois, also shows that James was born circa 1809 in Massachusetts. In Chicago, James\' occupation was that of a merchant. The 1880 census record indicates that he was widowed and residing with his daughter Roana Montague (age 44), also widowed, and her two children, Wallace (age 9) and Mary B (age 3 1/2). His burial plot in the Union Street (Old City) Cemetery includes the burials of ten other Buel family members.
Note: James M. Buel is mentioned as a veteran of the Black Hawk War in the October 25, 1941, issue of The Vidette-Messenger, Valparaiso, Porter County, Indiana, in an article titled \"Plat Graves Of War Vets Over County\" [Volume 15, Page 1, Column 3].
