First edition. 8 1/4" x 5 1/8". Bound in original sheep leather with gold spine titles. Frontis + 532 pages including index + 4 page facsimile handwritten working draft with corrections of the Declaration of Independence bound in to the rear measuring approximately 12 1/2" x 8".
This is volume 4 of Jefferson's memoirs and correspondence. It contains 193 letters from August 30, 1803 to June 24, 1826 as well as 83 pages reprinting portions of Jefferson's diary.
The most extraordinary part of the book is the 4 page facsimile of Jefferson's handwritten draft of the Declaration of Independence on parchment paper:
Condition: The book is fully intact with no missing or torn pages, with the exception of the title page which is missing about half an inch of its top margin. The boards are heavily worn but intact. The front board is loosening and beginning to detach at the joint. There is an owner's name on the front pastedown. The pages have varied states of foxing from very light to very heavy and I've included photos of both.
