1844 antique DIARY, Henry Clay, WHIG Party HORACE GREELEY, Patchogue Long Island:

For sale here is a handwritten diary from 1844.

The diary starts in May of 1844 and ends in December of 1844.

There are about 140 pages of handwritten logs.

The diary has a great deal of political information, both local and national, and the author seems to have been very active in the Henry Clay campaign- perhaps even a local organizer, delegate or fundraiser.

As best I can tell the authors last name was Stevens, but I can\'t make out the first name- see photos.

All the writing in this diary takes place in the Long Island and New York area.

There is extensive detail about his time in Patchogue, where he seems to have been involved in organizing the party, also lots of talk about boating and some romance with a certain Mary Higgins.

Numerous mentions of political meetings, including mentioning Horace Greeley being at one; A Millerite meeting at Wallace (or Walter) Smith\'s barn and at least one other mention of a Millerite meeting; Saratoga Springs; New Rochelle; whig electors; the Bowery; Blue Point; Patchogue Lane; Medford Station; some commentary on the Democratic Convention in Baltimore; a boat trip to the Fire Island Light House; numerous local families and people are mentioned by name; etc.

To be clear, I don\'t think he was actually from Patchogue or just summering there- I can\'t be sure.  About half way through the diary he mentions leaving \"the country\" to return to the city- by which I think he meant New York City.

This diary is written in an elegant script, but it is rather slow and difficult for me to read- not being used to it.  So I don\'t have a full idea of its contents because I couldn\'t spend that much time on it.

Numerous mentions of financial transactions, many of which, I think, seem to be of a political fundraising sort.

Numerous mentions of Henry Clay and the upcoming presidential election- I get the impression he may have been an organizer or fundraiser for Clay.

He also details lots of his personal time- everything from tea with so and so, to boating along the Long Island waters, to romantic feelings for a lady friend.

The diary is 8 inches tall, 7 inches wide.

Leather spine and board tips with marbled covers.

CONDITION OF THE DIARY is FAIR- covers worn and leather of spine is worn away; rear cover is present but detached and front cover is barely hanging on; antique string page binding is loose but still functional; no foxing but pages considerably faded; there are water stains to the very last three pages only, but they don\'t affect the writing- see very last photo; no dogeared pages; no handling marks; in spite of the water stains, no odors.

30 day money back guarantee- no questions asked.

Shipped with full insurance- at our expense if shipped in the United States.

Shipped in a box with bubble wrap, not an envelope.

  All questions are welcome.
