1845 stampless folded letter with red \"WASHINGTON CITY/D.C.\" cds and red \"10\" rate handstamp, addressed to Hon. J.B. Macy at Buffalo, NY (address corrected fromDetroit, Mich.).

2 pg. letter contents, dated at Washington City, Sept. 4, 1845, from Hiram Walbridge.

The writer of this letter, HIRAM WALBRIDGE, (1821-1870), was born in Ithaca, NY, and moved to Ohio with his parents, settling in Toledo in 1836. Admitted to the bar in 1842, and commenced practice in Toledo; Appointed Brigadier General of Militia in 1843; Moved to NY and engaged in business in Buffalo; Moved to NYC in 1847; In Congress from NY, 1853-1855.Died at age49.

The letter is to John B. Macy, (1799-1856), born in Nantucket, Mass; Moved to NYC in 1826, and later that year to Buffalo; Resided in Cincinnati, 1842-1845; One of the founders of Toledo, Ohio; Moved to Fond du Lac, Wisconsin Territory in 1845, and in 1850 movedto the town of Empire, Wis., near de Nevew Lake; In Congress from Wisconsin, 1853-1855; Died in the burning of the Steamer \"Niagara\", about a mile from Port Washington on Lake Michigan, and his body was never recovered.

A scarce autograph letter signed, (ALS), of this future US Congressman, who died at age 49, written to another future Congressman (interestingly, they both served their 2 year terms in the same years), with great content, in which Walbridge is in Washington with letters of recommendations to important people in Washington, hoping to get an appointmentas a U.S. Superintendent on Mineral Lands in Wisconsin. He writes that he has an interview with \"Mr. Walker\" scheduled for today (U.S. Secretary of the Treasury, Robert J. Walker), but has received some discouraging news regarding his prospects - namely that a \"Mr. McElmore\" of Tennessee had been appointed Superintendent of the St. Croix Mining District (a misspelling of John C. McLemore, who was appointed in July, 1845), and that \"Gen. Stockton at Lake Superior has too many strong claims to think of having him removed\" (a reference to John Stockton, who was U.S. Superintendent for Mineral Lands on Lake Superior). He also writes concerning \"matters at Toledo\".

Docketing in John B. Macy\'s handwriting on the back of the cover, notes that the letter arrived \"during my absence at the West\".

The letter reads:

\"After I left you, I proceeded at once to N.Y. and from thence to Poughkeepsie, where I saw Genl. Cunningham, who returned with me to N.Y. At his suggestion, I proceeded to this City, with a view of presenting my letters and aoffering the action of those to whom they were addressed. To this time, I have been unable to see Mr. Walker, tho I am to have an interview with him today. But I have learned that a gentleman from Tennessee, a Mr. McElmore, has been appointed Superintendent of the St. Croix Mining district, and that Genl. Stockton at Lake Superior, has too many strong claims to think of having him removed.

The opinions you expressed in reference to matters at Toledo, seem to be the most consistent and practicable, and I wish you were here, to enforce these claims with your influence and knowledge of the benefits to result from the change, to which I have alluded. Will you address me here, saying when you will be here, for if soon, I will await your return.

I rec\'d a letter from George, who was obliged to return to Cincinnati after I left Columbus, but who will be here tomorrow Evening, as he was to leave Columbus Tuesday last. I was unable to send you the papers I promised, as I did not find them at Lockport, as they were promised me they should be.

Hoping you will be successful , I subscribe myself yours truly,

Hiram Walbridge\"

Very Fine.
