This item is a wonderful,original letter, dated 1847, Washington, D.C.; where Major General Roger Jones has signed a letter to Massachusetts Adjutant General H.K.Oliver regarding militia returns received. Letter is 8x11, folds, else in overall good condition.

Roger Catesby Jones(1789–July 15, 1852) was an officer in theUnited States Marine CorpsandUnited States Armywho was the longest-servingAdjutant General of the U.S. Armyin U.S. history, holding the position from 1825 to 1852.

Jones was appointed asecond lieutenantin the United States Marine Corps on January 29, 1809 and was promoted tofirst lieutenantlater that year. He resigned in July 1812 to accept a commission as acaptainof artillery in the United States Army. He receivedbrevetstomajorandlieutenant colonelfor his services in theWar of 1812. He was promoted tocolonelandadjutant generalin August 1818, and in March 1825 became Adjutant General of the U.S. Army. He received brevets to colonel in 1824, tobrigadier generalin 1832, and tomajor generalin 1848. He died in 1852 and is buried in theCongressional Cemetery.
