This is a collection of 21 classic children\'s nursery rhymes and stories, many which came to be known as Mother Goose stories. Some of the early versions here are different than later versions : the girl in the Three Bears is called \"little silver hair\" instead of Goldilocks. The story of Mother Goose and Her Son Jack has anti-Semitic language which is changed in later versions.
Editor Joseph Cundall, who was a book publisher and photographer, was known for employing the best illustrators. This book is nicely illustrated throughout with engravings. Some of the drawings are apparently hand colored while most are black-and-white.
Though most likely published by Grant and Griffin in the UK, this extremely rare copy was created for the American market. William G. Baker of Lowell Massachusetts,, a scarce name, is listed as publisher on the title page along with Joseph CundaIl of London . The verso of the title page has a greeting for the American market.Condition
it looks like the binding and hinges have had some repair. The book feels tight. The end pages are marbled. There is a blind stamp and some damp staining at the top of the front end page. The previous owner\'s info is written on the top of the title page. One page of Little Bo Peep has had repair.. The large majority of the pages are clean but there are a couple of spots of foxing.
