This folded lettersheet / stampless letter hasa manuscript postal marking for Flat Rock Va, April 24th, a 10 cents rateand is addressed toMessrs Lindsay & Blakiston, Philadelphia, Penn, and is a one page letter written byRo. E. Harris.

The dateline is 1850 Powhatan Virginia.

Lindsay and Blakiston was a publisher and bookseller in Philadelphia. Like most of the existing letters sent to Lindsay and Blakiston correspondence, at some point in the 20th century, it was cut in half and repaired by old scotch tape, with resultant stain. As one postal history dealer has written: \"This correspondence is well-known, destroyed in the 1940s by the successors to the company .... The best postal history items that previously were sliced in half were saved and archivally put back together with document tape that has deteriorated.\"

Saying \'Archivally\' would be giving them too much credit, considering the quality of the tapethey used.

From an 1851 on-line genealogy library record: William S. Harris was a brother of Dr. Robert E. Harris, who d. 24 May 1850. Mary J. Harris was the wife of Robert E. Harris. Their son was Edwin A. Harris (under 21 in 1850).

Edwin A. Harris is in the 1850 Powhatan census, age 8/12, with his mother Mary J. Harris , age 23. James S. Harris, age 26, from Chesterfield co., was also in the household.

Some abstracts:

\"I was sadly disappointed when I heard through your communication that you had not received any funds from Dr. Rice [?] Royster on my account, it was through Dr R. I became subscriber to your work & I paid him up regularly to 1849 & I think offered him pay for that year but he said it made no difference then.\"

\"I have concluded to wait no longer but send you your money ...\"

\"My health is very feeble, so much so I am confined to my room which disqualifies me from doing business & disables me to read any Medical work.\"

The letter has some wear / tear / stains.

As usual with stampless letters, after writing on one or more sides of a sheet of paper, the letter was folded several times and mailed. Please note that most stampless letters have faults such file folds, tears at and opposite the sealing wax area, and some stains / wear / tear here and there. I hope the scan gives you a general idea of the condition.

An interesting letter good for genealogy and history research. See my other sales for similar items.
