This is an 1850 Walton’s Vermont Registerand Farmer’s Almanac with a handwritten diary. It originally belonged to EdwardHanaford. It would be a great source of information for anyone living in orinterested in this area of Vermont. He mentions the cities of Cambridge, Colchester Falls,Waterbury, Burlington, and Eden. Thenhe talks about the “Flats” quite a bit and when I went to look his name up onthe web I found an Edward Hanaford living in Underhill Flats or Underhill Center so I’m assuming this is our man.He talks about his father living in Edenand he goes on a short visit to see him at one point. He also mentions severalnames of the folks in the area and that might also give you a better clue as towhere he lives. Some of those names are: Rev. Dixon, Atchinson, Cyrus Prindle,Bronson, Foster Taylor, A. Kilburn, Riley, Uncle Jo Fairfield, J. Story, P.Hall, Wm. York, M. Hapgood, Terrill, N. Bick, Ingram, Stephen S. Brown,Reynolds, Woodworth, Fairchild, D. B. McKenzie, Levi Nutting, Joseph Carr andmore.

If this is the same man as I found on theweb then he was born in 1816 and his father was Capt. Nathaniel M. Hanaford whoserved as a fifer and also a drum major in the war of 1812.

One of the best things concerning thisdiary is that he’s a carpenter and he’s building the local church and onDecember 26th, 1850 the church is dedicated. I also found his namelisted as a carpenter in an online directory from the early 1880’s. Says helives in Underhill.

His entries are simple and short but stilla great historical Vermont Collectible. Here are a few examples of hisentries….

“Osgood electricity lecture….E. P. Methodist and J. W.Baptist society formed…Made coffin for L. Tilitson boy at Riley’s…To OskerTilitson’s funeral. Cold North…Built stagion, cut Ch hole. Built meet housechim….(I’m sure the last entriesmeans “Built staging. Cut church hold. Built meeting house chimney)….Cold N. W. Wind. Ex Stage Bates moved newstore….Great talk about a tavern, laid lobby floor…Great excitement abouttavern and more talk. Fast day…Railroad celebration in Burlington….Great flareup about election…The Green Mountain turned white….Hung meeting houselamps…Dedication of New Church. A dinner S. D. Brown. Loveland…..”

Not only do you get the handwrittenentries which are in the back of this diary but there are a total of 144 pagesand 118 of those pages have to do with other useful information like:Meteorological Observations, Town Officers and Postmasters, Attorney’s andPhysicians, Merchants and Traders, Clergymen, County Officers, Banks andInsurance Companies, and more. The diary measures about 3 ¾” x 6” and it doeshave some water damage on the cover but the binding and pages look good. Almostevery day has an entry.
