A fabulous and rare silk and wool woven and block printed shawl dating from c 1850
A gauzy gossamer silk ground, woven with a trellis design within the fibres, has been block printed with the boteh or paisley motif
Bordered and thenexuberantlyfilled with an all over stripe
Adapted for the European market, the border and striped motifs are filled with a spriggy floral design
This evening shawl is huge, designed to be draped over enormous crinolines, and probably printed in Paisley, Scotland
Please inspect the photographs where you will see the design realised in blue, green, orange, brown and yellow; solid on the trellis and soft on the gauze
it is when layered that the colour builds and the detail becomes most apparent
There are several small splits within the length and the fringed ends have in some areas come adrift, been crudely mended and the silk fringe has become tangled as shown
But given the age and size, 4\'8\" wide and 10\' long (142cm x 304cm), this is in very good condition
The featherweight nature and inherent fragility of the textile mean this is a rare and fabulous survivor
for the collector, textile historian or enthusiast
Not stained but lightly crumpled and slightly mustyfrom storage
No apparent moth damage
