This letter dated 1853, Aurora, Ohio, is from Hopson Hurd to Darius Lyman of Portage, regarding a possible problem in a law suit and possible land lines along the Mississippi...signed atcenter of second page by Hopson Hurd, 8x11, two pages, addressed outer leaf, overall good condition.

Hopson Hurd (1793-1869), the son of William Hurd, of Goshen, Connecticut, drove a wagonload of goods to the Western Reserve in 1815 and established a general store in Aurora.In Aurora, about 1809, a large ashery was run for many years by Hopson Hurd, who also had a pearl ash oven, and shipped large quantities to Pittsburgh. Hopson Hurd also brought the first stock of goods, and sold them for a good round price, at least his wet goods, getting 50 cents and 75 cents per drink for brandy. Hurd was also the first Postmaster at the Center.
