Mary & John FORGE

with BroughtonBOSTONand John BOSTON

Completely handwritten Acknowledgement and Common Pleas

Two page document 1857 – Acknowledgement and Common Pleas, both completely handwritten, in respect of Mary Forge, wife of John Forge. The other interested parties are Broughton Boston and John Boston.

Sworn at Wakefield before Henry Brown and Thomas Lee regarding property in (named in document) in the County of York.

These Certificates were to ensure that a married woman was of full age (over 21) and fully understood what was happening where she was selling or mortgaging property jointly with her husband. It was intended to stop a man taking advantage of his position if he had inherited property through marriage to his wife. It was later superseded by the Married Womens Property Acts of 1882 and 1907.

Some of these documents are completely hand written in the most beautiful ‘copper plate’ script writing, some have embossed seals with real silver centres, some have Court stamps, some have additional orders – and some have it all!! Some are on parchment and some are on vellum.

Some of the documents give great detail - individual addresses, details of stocks, named companies, and so on. Some of the other people (called interested parties) named on the documents can be helpful in expanding a family tree. They could be relations, perhaps siblings, in-laws or cousins, or they may be business partners or friends (I got a couple of previously unknown leads from them on my family tree!). On rare occasions the other interested party is a company rather than a person – another avenue to be followed up maybe?! Some of the documents have interested parties who are also acting in a legal capacity regarding the documents – hum!!!!

These fascinating original historical certificates are of enormous interest to family historians by helping to build a picture of the individuals named and their lives in the 1800s - each of them tells their own story. They are particularly significant in giving a rare insight into the lives of women at that time and are also of great value in understanding social, regional and womens history generally.

Please see my other listings for some of the other documents. I will be listing more of these over the coming weeks and months - they may be a part of YOUR family history - make sure to keep me bookmarked.

P&P CHARGES

Postal charges for the UK are Royal Mail First Class Recorded Delivery actual cost plus 50p p&p. I am happy to post to over 35 destinations worldwide using Royal Mail Airsure (their fastest international tracked service). Airsure prices give compensation up to £50 and include 50p p&p. I am always happy to combine postage costs for multiple items but because individual documents weights vary please ask me for details BEFORE paying. I am unable to combine charges after payment has been received. PLEASE NOTE – Items selling at over £42 (UK) MUST take out additional compensation cover to the selling price of the item. Items selling at over £50 (outside UK) MUST take out additional compensation cover to the selling price of the item.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT SENDING DOCUMENTS ABROAD

An export licence has to be obtained for any document that is sold and sent outside the UK in order to comply with the UK Export Licensing for Cultural Goods. This licence takes around 21 working days for me to obtain so the dispatch of documents outside the UK will be delayed until the necessary licence has been received. I am required to complete a formal six page document and submit in a large letter envelope together with three large full colour photos and return postage. This incurs an actual cost of £5.00 which is payable by any buyer wanting documents to be sent to an address outside the UK. This sum is in addition to the final offer price and postage costs.

DISPATCH

Orders are normally dispatched within three working days of receiving cleared payment to UK addresses. Addresses outside the UK take longer - see Important Information About Sending Documents Abroad for details.

RETURNS AND REFUNDS

Every effort is made to ensure that the information given is accurate but, always searching to expand my family history, I am not an expert. All the documents are originals - most are well over one hundred years old, some over one hundred and fifty years old. Like us, some of the documents have aged better than others and I try to describe their condition as accurately as possible in the item description. Occasionally handwriting can be difficult to read and I will give such information in the item description. If you have any questions please make contact before purchase. I will accept a return by recorded delivery within seven days if there has been a gross misrepresentation of the item. In the unlikely event you are not happy with your purchase I will issue a refund of the item excluding original delivery costs. The buyer will be responsible for the arrangement and cost of return carriage by recorded delivery.

If problems are revealed after purchase, please contact me before leaving neutral or negative response so that I may have the chance to rectify matters.
