By Sarah H Bradford New York: D. Appleton and 233 (6) pages. A small book measuring 6 3/4 inches tall by 4 3/4 inches wide. Hardcover bound in green publisher\'s cloth with cover designs embossed in gilt and in blind. The binding is has spotting and is worn. Spine is toned and a bit darkened, and has a small hole in the cloth and some splitting to the cloth along the rear hinge towards the foot. Chipping at headcap, bumping at foot. Inscriptions written on front flyleaf. \"Sam F. Mordecai, from his mother Nov 1861. I finished reading this to the children 12th Dec 1861 on Sam\'s birthday.\" Samuel Fox Mordecai (1852-1927) was a lawyer and professor who taught at Wake Forest and was the first dean of the Law School at Trinity College (now Duke University) in Durham, North Carolina. An inscription on the second front flyleaf reads, \"Alfred and Hillian (?) read this to granny - finished on June 18th 1909...(?)\" Random marks on rear pastedown and flyleaf. Text has overall toning, occasional foxing. There are smudges on some pages and some marks in text. Illustrated with several plates (we count four plates).
