Abraham Lincoln
nominated for President!Harper\'s Weekly
1860This is a single sheet only which is over 150 years old. It was published in the June 2, 1860 issue of Harper\'s Weekly, America’s leading illustrated paper during the 1800s. It measures 11 x 16 inches in size, is in excellent condition, with a few small age spots, and will make an interesting display piece. It presents the editorial opinions of Harper’s for that week, with the lead item taking up a quarter of the full page. The text is 14 column inches of small print, and slightly over 100 lines long. Most of the piece is devoted to the editors’ analysis of how William Seward was surprisingly defeated for the Republican Presidential nomination in the party’s recent convention. The text is titled, “THE NOMINATION OF LINCOLN.” It begins:“The action of the Republican Convention at Chicago, in passing over Mr. Seward and choosing Mr. Lincoln as its standard-bearer for the ensuing campaign, is the subject of much comment and some controversy in the papers. . . .”The editorial continues on to discuss Horace Greeley’s role in Seward’s loss, wondering if he played the part of a Brutus or a Judas. It’s only other reference to Lincoln is in a part which comments:“Finally, many persons seem to think that the Convention could not resist the outside pressure in favor of the champion of Illinois; on the very day the platform was adopted the strength of the rival competitors was tested by a trial of lungs, and the Lincoln men (being backed by the spectators and outsiders) shouted so much longer and louder than the Seward men that the weak members at once discovered that Lincoln was the favorite, and made haste to rally to his support.”The editorial appeared on the back side of the paper’s front page, and that features an article on “The Japanese Ambassadors” who had recently arrived in Washington, and which is illustrated with an attractive woodcut engraving of these Japanese diplomats, dressed in their elaborate and fancy native state costumes. This engraving is surrounded by a text on the Ambassadors, their costumes, and activities.**************
