1860 National Republican Chart Abraham Lincoln Presidential Campaign Chart:
1860 NATIONAL REPUBLICAN CHART ~ LINCOLN & HAMLIN
This is a National Republican Chart - a hand-colored illustrated poster for the Presidential Campaign that was issued sometime after May 18, 1860, published by thecartographic firm ofH. H. Lloyd & Co. New York. At the Republican National Convention in May 1860, the party nominated Abraham Lincoln of Illinois and Hannibal Hamlin of Maine for president and vice-president. Though the two men had never met, they were both strong orators who opposed extending slavery into the western territories which was a major reason for the founding of the Republican Party just four years earlier.
This type of “chart” was a large political poster that contained statistics and information that first appeared in the mid-1850’s. It has many detailed features including: a nice central portrait image of a beardless Lincoln and his running mate along with their biographies; a summary of the Republican platform adopted at the Chicago Convention that year; a large color coded map of the United States delineating the slave states, and various statistical information such as the 1856 popular vote by state; the 1850 area and population per state (free vs. slave states) and former President’s birth dates. In the border are images of the first 15 U.S. Presidents with George Washington featured at the top center and various anecdotes and quotes from Lincoln as well as past presidents that promoted Republicanism, democracy, and antislavery.
The information that I found in my research of this poster is that it was most probably a commercial venture rather than strictly a political product, as the printer, H. H. Lloyd & Co., produced other similar charts, including one for the Democratic Party and one listing all the parties and candidates. This was a poster that people would most likely have just stuck up on the wall of their homes or at a bar or club and most would have been destroyed which would make this poster a bit rarer than frameable campaign posters of that time. I have found other examples of this particular poster in state museums and universities.
This historical chart has strong illustrations and color still but shows heavy wear from its 155+ years of age with significant edge wear, wrinkles, small holes, tears and creases throughout. It is framed in a nice frame behind glass so the photos may show glares. Please note that some photos were taken outside as well as inside so there is some variations in colors. I have no knowledge or information of previous owners except for the name that is handwritten in two places on the chart: “Fremont Miars, Spring Valley, Ohio”. Fremont Miars (1861-1937) lived his whole life, as well as his father, as farmers in the Spring Valley, Ohio area. The frame measures approximately 33 1/4" wide by 40 1/2" tall and the chart measures 28" wide by 36" tall. Please see photos for condition details and ask me any questions you have. What an absolutely wonderful piece of Abraham Lincoln history to own!
