Superb 1860s Civil Waralbumen ink signed cdv portrait of Capt. William A. Barker who served with the 4th Maine Infantry taken in Alexandria,Virginia by Bowdoin,Taylor & Co. The 4th Maine suffered major losses in many important battles including Gettysburg where they helped hold the Union line against Pickett\'s Charge and took part in severe fighting at the Devil\'s Den.

The 4th Maine fought with the Army of the Potomac at the Battle of Bull Run, the Siege of Yorktown, the Battle of Williamsburg, Seven Pines, Malvern Hill, Groveton, the Second Battle of Bull Run, Chantilly, the Antietam Campaign, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, and at the Battle of Gettysburg.At Gettysburg, on July 2, 1863, the regiment fought along Houck\'s Ridge and in Devil\'s Den. When the Confederate attack threatened to take the high ground along Houck\'s Ridge, Colonel Elijah Walker of Rockland stood his ground. Outnumbered, with Rebel troops visible on the ridge above him and in front of him, Colonel Walker ordered his men from Maine to fix bayonets and charge. scans for condition.Light crease in back that slightly shows in front.
