1860's Mahogany Tabletop Mechanical Stereoviewer / Stereoscope Beckers-type #1 For Sale
Very Rare and wonderful, 1860's flame mahogany, Table Top Mechanical Beckers-Type Stereoviewer / Stereoscope used to view daguerreotype or glass Stereoviews as well as standard, early card mount Stereoviews.
This beautiful, mid 19th century, Tabletop Viewer measures approx. 9" by 10 1/2" at the base and 15 1/2" tall. It is made entirely of beautiful, tight, flamed grained mahogany with stereo eyepieces that are fixed focus. This Tabletop Viewer can hold 25 Stereoviews on a revolving, internal mechanism that is operated using knobs on the right and left hand sides of the body of the Viewer
The Viewer carries no makers mark or label but is of the type known to collectors as a "Becker Style" Stereoscope. The interior of this type of viewer holds a number of Stereoview Photographs in mounts on a belt. When the knob on the side is turned the Photos come into view one at a time. The Viewer offered here includes 24 of the original 25, wire internal Stereoview holders but the belt is broken and the mechanism, although fully present, is in need of repair and reassembly.
This rare and wonderful, Tabletop Mechanical Becker Style Stereoviewer / Stereoscope / Stereopticon is in good condition only. The Viewer lacks the hinged "frame" that would hold a frosted glass panel on the back of the body of the viewer and let in somewhat "filtered light for viewing glass stereoviews. We are including a pane of frosted glass that fits the opening but the wooden "frame" that originally held the pane of glass is lacking. Otherwise the Viewer is complete with all parts of the internal mechanism present but with the mechanism unassembled and in need of repair. The body and base of the Viewer retains its original, highly polished "French Polish" surface and appears to have never been refinished or altered in any way. The wooden eyepieces and the wooden knobs all originally had a painted black surface and there are only remnants of this black paint remaining (an easy restoration). The Viewer is very attractive skilled woodworker familiar with the restoration of Antique furniture would be able to fabricate the missing part. A more skilled restorer will also be able to repair and reassemble the mechanical mechanism.
