Up for sale is a vintage Civil War Era Soldier\'s letter datelined Camp AdlerJuly 12, 1861, Washington Heights. Letter wasa written by Benjamin Pine, Company H, 10th Regiment, New Jersey Volunteers. Letter is addressed to Ben\'s Mom, Sarah Pine, c/o John Weest, Mount Holly, NJ. Paper has damaged edges and spot staining. Transmittal cover is open pn three sides and barely attached by a very small part of the fourth side. Cover is of a dirty and stained appearance, with docketing on the back. Letter was transcribed by jkpaper27305 and it reads as follows:Camp Adler, July 12th, 1861Washington HeightsDear Mother, I send you these few lines tolet you know that I am well and happy, thank God for his mercies to me, and hoping to find you in the same state when you receive these few lines that I have sent, and I want to let you know that I am enlisted in the United States Service for the term of three years or during the War, under the command of Col. William F. Small. Our camp is in the District of Columbia, about a mile from Washington, or about 2 miles from Virginia, and if you write, you direct your letter for Camp Adler, Colonel Wm. F. Small Regt., 26th P.V., and I will get, andput my name on it. Dear Mother, I want to let you know how we are used in the Camp in the service of the government. We hardly get enough to eat or drink, and a great many of the men that has got a little money has to buy their victuals from the people that comes in to the Camp with baskets to sell their cakes and pies, and I wish you would send me on a little money so that I can have a little change from hard biscuits and Fat Pork. We are used pretty hard in the Camp by the strict rules of the Officers. If we go out from the lines of the guards, we are put in the guard house for perhaps 10 days, or put on double duty, or gets chain and ball that weighs about 60 pounds. Dear Mother, we don\'t know what time that we may move right into Virginia, the seat of War, and I guess that we will have a pretty hard Battle of it. Dear Sister, I send you my best respects and love and hope that I will return again back from the War, and see you all happy and in good health. I send my love to my mother and Sister Mary Weist (Weest) and Husband and all my friends, and I hope that I may return to see them all well and happy.
