Up for sale is a vintage Civil War Era soldier\'s letter datelined Washington D.C.. Letter is dated June 5, 1861 . Letter is of a personal and what\'s going on around here nature, written by Benjamin Frank Hosford to his mother Sophia, who was either in Cummington MA or Williamstown MA. Benjamin Frank Hosford enllisted in New Haven CT during April of 1861 and mustered into service in Company D, 19th Connecticut Volunteers, later renamed 2nd Connecticut Artillery and died at the Battle of Cedar Creek, Virginia, October 19, 1864...I had the letter transcribed by jkpaper27305 and it reads as follows:.
Washington, D.C., June 5th, 1861Dear Mother, As it is rainy today, so that we cannot drill, I will try to improve the time by answering your letter of the 28th, which was received in due time, and very much welcomed. I cannot write much, for there has not been much of a stir yet among the troops, although some Regiments have been sent on into Virginia, among them are the Conn. 1st Regt.. We are in the 2d Regiment. We have been reviewed by the General, and pronounced ready for the field, and I suppose we shall be moved over the river to Arlington Heights, Va. soon. You will direct letters to Washington as before, and they will be forwarded to us by the department. We shall probably have some trenching to do and less drilling after we get there It is about ten miles from Washington. I was not surprised to hear that Add is in the service. I think if we are not sick, weshall have no cause to fearof not returning home at the end of our three months. It certainly is a lazy business to be in war without any chance of fighting. Our boys are all healthy, and itching to have a scrape with the Southern devils. The weather here is quite warm, but not very oppressive yet. You say \'be careful what you eat by George!\' We have to be mighty careful or we don\'t get anything. We are not allowed anything but our regular rations, and they are not calculated to give us the gout, I assure you, but we can stand it 8 months longer, I guess, considering the cause for which we labor. I suppose it is better for us than if we could get every thing we want. I have written to Jerry & Hat, and received letters from them, but I don\'t get much time to write, and so I do not write much to anybody. I wish you would not wait for me, but write often, and tell Cal to write, and Mary, I should like to hear from her. I will answer all the letters she will write me. Tell Hattie that I haven\'t been fighting yet, but if anybody pitches into me, I\'ll roll up my sleeves and give \'em fits. You did not write how the baby was getting along. I would like to have the whole. I don\'t mean the \'whole or none\', for if you can\'t write the whole, why give us what you can afford, and it will be thankfully received. My things are at Uncle Phelp\'s, I suppose,Add took my trunk off with him, and probably took part of my things. Nobody knows. Nor do I care, if he will look out for himself. Write soon. Your affectionate Son, B. Frank HosfordSanctioned by C.L. Hosford Paper has spot staining..
