You are offerding on a wonderful 1861 Civil War related (3.25) page letter written by H. E. Wier, from Mississippi. It is chock-full of historic references and research leads. H.E. refers to General Ben McCulloch, (who successfully commanded the Confederate Army to victory in the Battle of Wilson Creek Missouri and Pea Ridge in Arkansas). Most importantly, H.E. refers to the Choctaw Indians as being slow in showing their patriotism (inference is toward the Confederate effort). Choctaw Indians fought on both sides of the war. H.E. also mentions the Jasper Rifles company and Luka Mississippi, where a famous battle was fought in 1862 and Desotoville, Choctaw County, Alabama.
Mississippi, Friday MorningAugust 13, 1861
My Dear Cousin.
I have just received your long looked for letter. I could not imagine why you were so silent. I would like so much to have been with you in your Saturday night surprise when our soldier boys returned. I am sorry they are to go to Missouri. I don\'t fancy Ben McCullochs manner of tricking prisoners giving them up to the Indians for he may expect to be treated in like manner. I am sorry to hear of the ill health of Aunt & Cousin Abbie. I hope they are both quite well by now. We have almost despaired of ever seeing any of you in Jasper. I saw Dr Isard and your cousin Laura some time since at an Indian Ball Play. She said, she she had been looking for you for some time out to see her. Tell Cous Ell I would like very much to hear about Mr. \"Jas\" as she can tell more than anyone else. The Jasper Rifles have left for Virginia. They were at Luka. They left their Captain and thirty others sick, several others died. Choctaw has sent off one company, The Desotoville I suppose, the others have disbanded. I think Choctaw is rather slow in showing its patriotism. We are having very wet weather now. It will almost ruin the cotton. Pa has good corn and would have had good cotton too if it was not for the rain. Our Minister that went in the Army has returned in bad health. He had the measles and has suffered very much from them. We received a letter from Emma. She said if Choctaw did not have many company\'s on the tented field she had some very patriotic baby\'s, one about thirteen had caught the military fever so bad he left home and walked about thirty miles to join a company. But his father, finding it oiut went for and brought him home. So that ended his military career. I don\'t know when we can go to Enterprise. Cousin Eveline will go to Meridian (sic) the last of this month. I would like to go as far as Ev with her but don\'t know whether I will or will not. We will still look for some of you out to see us. Pa, Ma and the children join me in much love to you and all our relations. Write very often to your affectionate cousin. H. E. Wier
PS When did you hear from from cousin Jane? I have not heard since I was in E____. She has quit writing to me. Does she ever write to cousin Ell? I would like so much to hear from her. H.E.Wier The first and fourth pages are illustrated in the scans. The letter measures 5 x 8 and is in fine condition.
