This sale is for the highly sought-after 1861-O silver half dollar, with the Confederate obverse. It has several ways of being referenced: FS-401, FS-007, W-11, WB-102, CSA obverse, CSA die crack variety. All these reference terms indicate that this variety has the famous die crack that runs from the upper obverse rim to the right of the 7th star, to the bridge of Miss Liberty\'s nose. The crack also continues below Liberty\'s chin to her upper shoulder. An identical crack was known to exist on the four proof coins struck by the Confederacy in 1861 using a normal obverse die and a special reverse die depicting the shield of the Confederate States of America. Accordingly, this CSA obverse variety is very popular with collectors. The coin being offered in this sale has been confirmed by PCGS as Genuine, with the WB-102 designation, and \"XF Details\". So what about the \'Smoothed\' qualifer? The code PCGS assigned on the label, 98, is a rather general code they use if they view the coin as having \"damage\". Exactly what caused the \'Smoothed\' qualifier is not clear. The coin however, looks quite attractive, with nice luster and eye appeal. The photos include one taken by PCGS of both the obverse and reverse. Two other photos show how clear and strong the nose-to-rim CSA die break is. XF coins of this variety with no qualifiers have been selling for well over $3,000. The price for this one has been substantially adjusted, taking the qualifier into consideration.
