HOLD AN AUTHENTIC PIECE OF CIVIL WAR HISTORY IN YOUR HAND!These are two original letters written by a soldier in the 148th Regiment Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry.
His name is Samuel Holloway.
He and two of his brothers enlisted in the 148th Regiment.
Samuel Holloway was killed at the Battle of Chancellorsville, May 3, 1863.The original Regimental History of the 148th Pennsylvania Regiment has a photograph of the writer, Samuel Holloway and his two brothers.
A copy of this photograph from the history will be included. Both letters are two sided letters written by Samuel to his wife from the camp. The first was written from \"Camp Beaver on November 22, 1862;\"The second was written from \"Camp Near Fredericksburg, January 26, 1863.\"
Samuel writes of his early introduction to military life.
These sentiments were probably repeated in thousands of thoughts during the war.
In his January, 1863 letter he refers to the famous terrible rain and \"Burnside\'s Mud March.\"
Samuel\'s grammar is not great, but you can read his thoughts and emotions quite clearly. From his sentiments you can tell how much he misses his wife and home.In the November, 1862 letter he writes about the terrible weather and that \"it was a bad time for the poor guards. I was on picket once but did not get wet.\" \"We got boards to buildbarracks and a new hospital.\"
In the January, 1863 letter he responds to a previous letter he received from his wife. He learns that his father is ill.He also writes about camp life, \"I must now tell you that I was out on picket and just cam in. I found it the hardest task I undertook in a long time to get through the mud but I got home without sticking fast.\"
He also clearly describes an accident that oftenoccurredto the soldiers when loading their rifles:\"He was drawing the load out of his gun this morning and when he was drawing it out it went off and the rammer and the whole load wentthroughhis hand and tore hisfrontfinger off on his right hand and tore his hand very bad.\"
