SKETCHES
OF THE
RISE, PROGRESS, AND DECLINE
OF
SECESSION

Original 1862 Edition of “Sketches of the Rise, Progress, and Decline of Secession with a Narrative of Personal Adventures Among the Rebels” by W.G. Brownlow :: Published by Philadelphia: George W. Childs :: Measures 5 1/4 x 7 3/4" :: Complete with 458 Pages + Ads.

VERY GOOD CONDITION: A tightly bound volume, solid hinges, moderate foxing throughout, cover wear as shown, complete with all pages; overall a great copy.

Here is the 1862 First Edition of Tennessee Unionist and editor of the last pro union newspaper in the antebellum South William G. Brownlow\'s work on the cause of the Confederate States Secession from the Union leading to the American Civil War and his Personal Reminiscences amongst the Confederate Rebels.

An outspoken and unconditional advocate of the Union, Brownlow continued to ridicule secession until Confederate authorities suppressed the Knoxville Whig and caused him and his family to flee north. His press and type were destroyed and the Confederate secretary of war, Judah Benjamin, banished Brownlow to the North. Offered a safe conduct pass to Union lines, Brownlow returned to Knoxville only to be arrested and imprisoned. Union prisoners in Knoxville endured starvation and other physical abuse for several months as part of an extortion ring involving a corrupt magistrate and jailor, and while Brownlow and many other prisoners were freed after Confederate authorities learned of the abuse, his health never fully recovered.

When Eastern Tennessee was brought under the control of Federal forces in 1863, Brownlow returned and was instrumental in restoring Yankee government there. Then, in 1865, he was elected governor. Toward the end of his second term, Brownlow was elected to the U.S. Senate. Brownlow\'s uncompromising and radical viewpoints and his relentless vindictive against his opponents made him one of the most divisive figures in Tennessee political history and one of the most controversial politicians of the Reconstruction-era South. The book remains in great condition and would make an excellent holiday gift for a Civil War Enthusiast.
