A Sutler is a civilian merchant who sells provisions to an army in the field, in camp or in quarters. The sutler sold wares from a wagon or tent, allowing them to travel along with an army. Certain sutlers were associated with particular regiments and had the monopoly on providing goods to the soldiers. A sutler\'s check was used by a soldier to buy items from the sutler\'s goods prior to payday; on payday the signed check was then presented to the paymaster, who paid the sutler from the pay due the soldier.

The 7th Regiment, Ohio VolunteerMilitiaWith the outbreak of the American Civil War in April 1861, Ohio Governor William Dennison dispatched George McClellan and Jacob Cox to the state arsenal in Columbus to investigate the guns and other supplies that Ohio had on hand to help equip the state\'s militia units. The two men discovered a few crates of rusted smoothbore muskets, mildewed harnesses for horses, and some six-pound cannons that could not be fired. Despite the lack of equipment, Dennison encouraged Ohio communities to revive the militia system and form units that they would send to Columbus, the state capital. Dennison entrusted McClellan with command of these units, asking him to create a cohesive and professional force out of the volunteers. Most of these units formed the basis of Ohio Volunteer Infantry units, which the State of Ohio eventually provided to the United States government for the war against the South. The Ohio Volunteer Militia units were the basis for Ohio\'s contribution of 90-day soldiers following President Lincoln\'s call to arms in 1861. When the three month enlistment expired, the militia units were folded into large Volunteer Infantry Regiments. Thus, the actual field existence of Ohio Volunteer Militia units did not last longer than the first few months of 1862.
