This item is a wonderful, original, letter dated 1862, Camp Franklin, written by George Denniston of the 38th Iowa Infantry to his friend Elizabeth regarding being on guard duty, the fact that in camp there are n..gers that wait on the officers...he sure would like one to wait on him. He would like to send a picture, but does not yet have his uniform...he eats and dreams of fighting...signed George Denniston. Letter is three pages, engraved letterhead of Bank\'s Division, 6x9, overall good condition.

George Denniston Residence Bradford IA; 19 years old.Enlisted on 8/20/1862 as a Private.On 9/12/1862 he mustered into \"C\" Co. IA 38th Infantry He died of disease on 8/21/1863 at St Louis, MO

The Thirty-eighth Regiment of Iowa Volunteer Infantry was organized under the call of thePresident, dated July 2, 1862. The companies were enrolled in the northEastern part of the State,mainly from the counties of Fayette, Winneshiek, Bremer, Chickasaw and Howard. Therendezvous was at Camp Franklin, near the city of Dubuque, and there the companies had allassembled about the 20th of September, 1862. The organization was not fully perfected,however, until November 4, 1862, upon which date the regiment was mustered into the serviceof the United States by Captain George S. Pierce, of the Regular Army.
